Toyota Motor Corporation

Toyota Motor Corporation is a well known automaker that manufacturers and distributes hybrid and non-hybrid vehicles. The company uses the name Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc in the United States. The automaker builds the Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV, and the upcoming Toyota Tundra Hybrid Truck.

Toyota Motor Corporation History

The company actually began as Toyoda, after the inventor Sakichi Toyoda. In 1924 Toyoda invents the Toyoda Model G Automatic Loom. In 1929 the Automatic-loom patent was sold to a British company. In 1930 Sakichi’s son Kiichiro Toyoda begin to do research on small gasoline-powered engines.

In 1933 the automobile department is established at Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. In 1934, while still a department of Toyota Industries, it created its first product Type A engine. In 1936 its first passenger car, the Toyota AA, was completed. In 1937 the Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. is established. The AA was a fully enclosed 4 door sedan that largely copied the Chrysler Airflow sedan. It had a metal body on a metal ladder chassis. The rear doors opened backwards. The front glass spanned the entire width of the body in a single pane.

Then in 1938 Honsha plant begins production. Kiichiro Toyoda, become the president of Toyota between 1941 and 1948. He resigned from the company in 1948 due to flagging sales and profitability, passing away four years later. In 1950 the company faces a financial crisis. Then Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. is established. In 1955 the Toyopet Crown, Toyopet Master and Crown Deluxe are launched.

Kiichiro’s cousin and confidant Eiji Toyoda became head of Toyota Motor Corporation, overseeing its successful expansion worldwide and the launch of Japan’s most prominent luxury vehicle brand, Lexus in 1957. The Crown became the first Japanese car to be exported to the United States and Toyota’s American and Brazilian divisions, Toyota Motor Sales Inc. and Toyota do Brasil S.A., were also established.

Joint Declaration of Labor and Management is signed in 1962. The first Toyota built outside Japan was in April 1963, at Port Melbourne in Australia. By the end of the decade, Toyota had established a worldwide presence, as the company had exported its one-millionth unit. IN 1965 Toyota won the Deming Application Prize for quality control. The following year the Corolla is launched and business tie-ups with Hino Motors Ltd. begins.

In 1974 the Toyota Foundation is established. A joint venture with GM begins production in the USA in 1984. Four years later Toyota Motor Manufacturing, USA, Inc. begins production. In 1989 the Lexus brand is launched in the USA. Toyota Motor Manufacturing does not begin production in the UK until 1992.

The Toyota Prius is launched as the worlds first mass-produced hybrid car. In 1999 the cumulative domestic production reaches 100 million vehicles. With high gas prices and a weak US economy in the summer of 2008, Worldwide Prius sales top 1-million mark. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc then becomes one of the top hybrid car producers in the world.

The Prius can be purchased starting at $22,000, the Camry at $26,150, and the SUV Highlander at $34,700. All of these vehicles deliver excellent mileage. The Prius offers 51/48, Camry 33/34, and the Highlander 27/25 average MPG.
