Is it possible to receive a $5,000 tip on a $27 meal? Sure it is, just ask Greg Rubar, who works as a waiter at a Houston, Texas restaurant on Saturday, when one of his regulars came in and left him a $5,000 tip after having a meal that came to $27.
Rubar has been working as a waiter at the D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe for 16 years while the couple that left him the generous tip had been regulars there for the last 8 years. Recently, the couple had heard that Rubar had lost his vehicle in a severe storm that hit the area weeks earlier, and he was left having to catch busses and cabs to get around.
When it came time to pay their bill Saturday, Greg was handed an envelope containing $5,000 in cash from the unidentified husband and was told to buy a car with it.
“He said, ‘We’re still going to come in, but we’re not going to tip you for a while.’ He said this is for you to go and buy a nice car,” said Rubar.
“It was a bit shocking to hear that. I was like, maybe $500, but $5,000 is quite a generous tip,” said restaurant co-owner Brina D’Amico Donaldson. “He’s an incredibly hard worker. He would work every shift if we would let him,” she added.
According to Rubar, he tried to return the tip feeling he could not except it, but the couple insisted he keep it, so now he will do with the money what it was intended for, and start shopping for a new car.
