Toyota and more fines might be imposed in the future. Toyota has paid fines of more than $16 million after it recalled 8 million vehicles. The U.S. Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, wants to see results from the automaker’s efforts to improve safety.

“If a fine is required, I think everyone recognizes now that safety is our number one priority, and we will do all that we can to uphold the laws in our country,” LaHood said in a statement. He also said the government was reviewing 500,000 documents from the company to determine whether the company should face another fine. “We probably won’t know that for a couple of months.”

The auto manufacturer still faces hundreds of lawsuits in the United States. Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda said he believed his company was making strong progress on its commitments to strengthen safety measures. “We are giving our local regions a greater role in making safety decisions, and we are sharing information across regions on a more timely basis,” Toyoda said in a statement.
