Abby Wambach has married her longtime partner Sarah Huffman in an amazing week for the couple. The U.S. soccer star posted the news about her wedding from her Twitter account, sending social media trends to honeymoon.
“Sarah and I wanted to thank everyone for all the love and support. We couldn’t be happier. What an amazing week it’s been. #honeymoon,” she wrote.
Wambach’s marriage took place Saturday in Hawaii.
Brandi Chastain, a teammate of Wambach’s on the USA’s 2003 World Cup team, says she’s thrilled for the couple.
“I knew about Abby’s engagement, I played with Abby for years,” Chastain told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday. “I’m very happy for her like I am for all my teammates and friends who get to experience that love that goes along with getting married. I’m thrilled for her.”
Wambach and Huffman were teammates last season for the Western New York Flash, the runners-up in the first-year National Women’s Soccer League. Wambach led the Flash in scoring and was league runner-up for MVP. Huffman, a former standout at the University of Virginia, was a starting midfielder and defender.
They previously were teammates with the Washington Freedom and magicJack in the WUSA and WPS.
Wambach, 33, broke Mia Hamm’s all-time international scoring record in June when she scored four times against South Korea in Harrison, N.J. She has 160 career goals.
The U.S. team returns to action for an international friendly against Australia on Oct. 20 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
