ABC Studios has purchased a Reba McEntire sitcom called “Malibu Country” and World, produced by Kevin Abbot, Narvel Blackstock, Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel.
“That means we will shoot the pilot next April and if everything goes like we hope it will, we’ll be shooting a sitcom called ‘Malibu Country’,” McEntire said. The sitcom will make its debut August 2012.
The ‘Malibu’ comedy is based on the McEntire’s wild country world after her rock-star husband cheats on her. Leaving her broke, she divorces him and moves her three children from Nashville to Malibu, where she tries to resurrect her singing career. Abbot, who produced Reba for the CW, is co-writer of the script.
MeEntire’s own sitcom, known as “Reba,” aired for six seasons from 2001-07 on the CW Network. The show has continued to build a strong audience through syndicated re-runs on the Lifetime Network and CMT.
While the singer/actress spent the past few years focusing on her busy music career, she always wanted to return to TV, “I’m so excited about doing another TV sitcom!” McEntire said in a statement. “I miss the ‘Reba’ show so much so it will be great to get back into the TV world again!!”
In addition, to the new ABC sitcom, McEntire told fans on Twitter that she plans to tour Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland next March.
