Amber Portwood Staying Sober: Teen Mom Releases Book on Staying Sober
Amber Portwood is staying sober and has released the new book “Never Too Late,” which talks about her addiction to prescription pills behind bars.
According to the The Hollywood Gossip, Portwood admits that even after learning her lesson with a 17-month prison sentence, sobriety has been a tough fight in the months since. In fact, she said, the temptation to use began the day she got out of prison. The Teen Mom prepped herself for the struggle while behind bars.
“The first day I was out… it’s whenever things are overwhelming for me, or any sort of emotion — sadness, depression, anything — it is very easy to go back to doing drugs because you don’t want to feel that way.”
As Amber Portwood is staying sober, she told Radar Online that she’s been been able to stay away from her old party crowd that used to be a bad influence on her before she went in.
“I don’t go out really … I stay with friends and family. I moved 20 minutes away, to a small town — and I’m just trying to do everything right … A lot of times it just depends on what I’m feeling, if I’m depressed or I’m sad or I’m bored, I have to learn to cope with it and I have to learn to do things … If I’m bored, I’ll call somebody or I’ll go do something or I’ll take a drive.”
However Amber Portwood does still have to deal with her medical diagnosis of depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. The Teen Mom admits that she’s not on any medication. She is scared to go to a doctor, but works hard at staying sober.
“It is hard but the sad thing about it is that I probably do need to be on medication for my bipolar but I kind of messed that up to where, at this moment, I don’t feel I would be strong enough to go to a doctor … I’m just afraid.”
Amber Portwood currently has visitation rights with her daughter Leah. She is keenly aware these days of how precious time spent with her daughter is. What’s more, continuing to have Leah in her life is a major motivator for the proud mama to stay on the straight and narrow.
The last time MTV filmed Amber Portwood, it was 2012 and she was wearing a prison uniform. In “Amber Behind Bars,” the former Teen Mom cast member sat down with Dr. Drew to talk about her addiction to opiates and what led to her jail sentencing. She appeared hopeless and alone, desperately missing her daughter Leah and still having difficulties communicating with her ex, Gary.
MTV captured the young mom on film the day she was released from jail, and it was as if viewers were looking at a totally different person. Amber Portwood couldn’t stop smiling through her first post-prison meal, which was a cheeseburger and chocolate shake. And it was a touching moment when she had her reunion with Leah.
Amber Portwood credited much of her newfound serenity to a chant she learned in rehab: “Be calm, be true, be quiet. Accept criticism, as well as accept praise. Be true to your highest ideal.”
While Amber Portwood is staying sober, she understands that there are many temptations, and the Teen Mom is trying to stay far away from it. “And I’m not about to put myself in that position right now until I feel like I am completely ready.” Portwood admits that the struggle is hard.
