American Guns Outcry After Sandy Hook Shooting

American Guns, a Discovery Channel reality TV series, has been canceled in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings and a dedicated Facebook page asking the network to remove the show.

“American Guns” had aired for three season’s and had not currently been airing new episodes. The series centered on the blended family where patriarch Rich Wyatt, his wife and his stepchildren ran Gunsmoke Guns, located in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. They specialized in gun manufacture, trade, customization, and instruction.

Since last Fridays shooting, a Facebook page was created, where people urged Discovery to cancel the show. They also used Twitter to criticize the show for its clarification of guns.

One post read, “I know you all have to make money but would Discovery Channel PLEASE consider ceasing to broadcast the show in the U.K.? Sadly your program makes buying/owning guns seem fun, glamorous, even normal,”

One critic tweeted, “Dear Discovery Channel: it’s not appropriate showing the program American Guns now!” Another weighed in: “With Discovery shows like ‘Sons of Guns’, ‘American Guns’, ‘Ted Nugent’s Gun Country’ etc it’s not surprising how guns r seen as acceptable.”

Despite the April 26, 2021 season 2 premiere drawing strong ratings, up 50% on the season 1 premiere, and Wyatt family members previously indicating they were ready to start filming a third season, a rep for the show told FOX411 “American Guns” would not film a third season but would not say the cancellation was connected to the Friday shootings.

Ironically since the announcement of the show’s cancellation, some fans took to Discovey Channels Facebook page to voice their displeasure in actually cancelling the show. “You folks at the Discovery Channel are spineless for caving in to political correctness. Shame on You!” Mark Angel, another Facebook user, posted: “Discovery I will no longer watch any of your shows due to your political agenda.”
