Billy Bob Thorton admits in a Wednesday night “Nightline” interview for ABC while talking about his new book, “The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts,” that of his failed marriage to sex symbol Angelina Jolie, that he “blew it” with her.
Thorton explains that he was the fault for the three-year marriage falling apart because of his own insecurities, and he felt he didn’t deserve someone as beautiful as Jolie and couldn’t deal with her fast-rising fame.
“We had a great marriage and I chickened out because I didn’t feel good enough,” he said in the interview discussing parts of the book. “That’s all that happened. It was no big deal, we never hated each other.”
“When you’re in a relationship, any two celebrities or whatever, you know, I think that puts a lot of pressure,” Thornton said. “When Angie and I got married, I was more famous than she was to start with and then when she becomes this big thing, it’s hard in these relationships.”
“I blew it because I didn’t think I was good enough for her,” he said, adding that he felt “like the Phantom of the Opera hiding in the catacombs … People have actually said that I didn’t deserve to be with her.”
Thorton’s marriage to Jolie in 2000 was his fifth and last since divorcing her in 2003 after a 2002 separation. Jolie is currently engaged to be married to long time companion and actor Brad Pitt.
