After originally rejecting an offer last month by Simon Cowell and the ‘X-Factor’ to become a judge and mentor for the singing competition, Britney Spears is now reportedly “very close” to signing a $15 million deal for the upcoming season.
Cowell had been looking for at least one high profile personality, such as Spears, to join him and L.A. Ried on the judging panel, since canning, Paula Abdul, and Nicole Scherzinger, after the conclusion of the premiere season.
“The fact that she’s one of the most talked about — not just pop stars, but people — in the world today means that you’ve got this star power,” Cowell said of Spears to Billy Bush in February on “The Billy Bush Show.” “She’s still hot, she’s still having hit records, and she’s still controversial. There’s a reason for that.”
Deadline.com was reporting Tuesday that sources had indicated to them that the deal was ready for signing by Spears other then having to iron out a few minor details.
Though sources say the deal was all but done neither Spears or ‘X-Factor’ reps have confirmed the deal. And considering that Spears had initially turned down the first offer, Spears did indicate interest in joining the show.
With an apparent Spears deal close to being done, Cowell still needs to find one more judge and replace the shows British host, Steve Jones, which Cowell has previously indicated before, he would like to have two American co-hosts. While auditions for the next season by the shows producers have already began, the judges auditions will not begin until the beginning of June.
