Cate Edwards, John Edwards eldest daughter, did her first interview since her father’s 2012 trial. Moreover, she talked about how her family was devastated about her father’s affair.
The Today show’s Savannah Guthrie sat down with Edwards to clear the air about how she felt during this tragic time in her life.
Edwards said she found out about her father’s affair through him.
“He told me,” the 31-year-old attorney and author said. “I guess he and my mom decided that was, you know, how it needed to be done. So yeah, I was devastated. And I was disappointed. I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family. And it was hard to see them go through this.”
She stood by her father’s side during all of his court appearances.
“I did not fault my dad for the trial,” said Cate. “He made those mistakes, there’s no question, but I never, never thought he did anything illegal. So I didn’t think (the trial) was right.”
In 2010, John came clean about fathering a daughter with Hunter, who worked as his campaign videographer.
“She’s my sister, and she’s just a really sweet, innocent little girl,” said Cate, a DC-based lawyer. “I certainly think of her as part of our family.”
The segment aired on Rock Center Friday at 10 p.m.
