Dakota Fanning is celebrating her 18th Birthday today, February 23rd, going from child actress to adult.
She was born Hannah, but is better known by her middle name, got her start in the television industry at 5 years-old. Dakota Fanning got her start by doing a commercial for Tide detergent. She then got her initial TV guest role in 2000, as a car accident victim on “ER.”
The actress also once played a younger version of Ally McBeal in the series of the same name for FOX. Her first film role was a breakthrough performance, in “I Am Sam,” at the age of seven. She played the daughter to Sean Penn’s character, who was a mentally challenged father fighting to keep custody of her.
The role earned her a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, becoming the youngest ever to receive such a nomination.
Though she did not win the award, she was awarded the ‘Best Young Actor/Actress’ award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association for her performance.
Since then she has taken on several roles in movies, acting along side some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Tom Cruise, and Denzel Washington.
Most recently she has had a reoccurring role as vampire Jane Volturi in the “Twilight” movie series.
