Damarys Ruiz, former Miss Venezuela, dies homeless only at the age of 68 after spending 15 years of her life on the streets. The former beauty queen had a law degree and shocked many when they found out that she had no other place to live, according to the Daily Mail
Ruiz first shot to fame in 1973 at the age of 26 when she entered the Miss Venezuela contest to represent her home state of Sucre to be named Miss Sucre. The sad part about this story is that no one from the family visited the hospital to identify her.
Nevertheless local reports have now told a brother who has declined to publicly identify himself has since made arrangements to have the woman’s body collected from the hospital mortuary. Despite the woman’s tiny stature of 5’2 judges at the time were dazzled by the woman’s intelligence and looks, including her hourglass figure.
Damarys Ruiz became Miss Venezuela and some say she dies with a broken heart. Despite the attention she received, Ruiz never made it to the big time.
After deciding not to pursue a career in law Damarys Ruiz instead chose to sell homemade crafts and junk jewelry.
Ruiz never had a proper boyfriend and lived with her brother. It’s been said that Damarys lived a life of torture because her brother was said to be jealous of her and didn’t allow her any freedom.
“He used to starve me. He often threatened me and often hit me. I repeatedly called the police but they never did anything,” she said during a 2005 interview.
Ruiz couldn’t stand the abuse, so she fled in 2000 and, with nowhere else to go, started living on the streets. Rosalba Gomes, who had known Damarys for the last two years of her life, said she lived a life of depression.
“I saw her two or three times in the week and I talked to her for long hours. Her life ended up with great depression, without receiving support from her family or friends. She couldn’t see any way to escape the trap she was in. She was a beautiful woman inside and outside. My cute little old lady. This lady was wonderful, educated and a great conversationalist. She was a lawyer and studied several years in the university and had opinions about everything.”
Ruiz learned fast that fame doesn’t last forever. But the truth was way too harsh for Damarys. Who would have known that the beauty queen with a law degree under her belt would end up destitute and homeless and be found dead in a park?
If the life of models and beauty contestants isn’t an easy one, it was worse for this former model. Damarys Ruiz, former Miss Venezuela, dies at 68, whose body was found in a park. She made a living by selling homemade crafts and junk jewelry.
