According to attorneys for Dennis Rodman’s ex-wife Michelle, the former All-Star NBA player owes more than $800k in back child support payments.
On Tuesday Rodman was sentences to 104 hours of community service after being found guilty on 4 counts of contempt for failing to pay child support between 2009 and 2010. He was also placed on three years of informal probation on the condition he keep up his child and spousal support payments.
However, Rodman still faces more contempt charges and 20 days in prison for additional combined child and spousal support payments he has not paid, that are reported to total $860,376.
Due to his earnings, at the time of 2004 the divorce filing, Rodman was ordered to pay $50,000 a month in child support, since then the amount has been reduced to $4,500 a month.
After originally filing for the divorce in 2004, after only about a year of marriage, the couple spent several years trying to reconcile the marriage but in 2012 Michelle was granted the full divorce after requesting for it. The two had a son and a daughter together.
”My suggestion is to use your talents as a motivator, as a fine, fine athlete and as a fine person to assist others in need,” Orange County Superior Court Commissioner Barry Michaelson told Rodman when he was sentenced to the community service.
Rodman said he would do whatever is needed of him near his Florida home, to fulfill his community service obligation and hoped he could work with kids in doing so.
Rodman will next have to be in court on June 22nd to deal with the additional contempt charges and disputes over the owed support.
After the hearing Rodman was quoted as saying, “It’s all about the kids. It does suck the fact that it had to come to this.”
