Oscar producer Brett Ratner is expected to name Eddie Murphy as host of the awards show when he talks with the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this week.
This is the first step before the 84th Academy Awards producer Don Mischer confirms Murphy as this year’s host.
Sources suggest that Ratner has only been talking to Eddie since getting the Academy Awards producing job. The legendary actor is also showing interest, and it could be a move to promote his upcoming film. He is starring in “Tower Heist” with Ben Stiller, and it’s set to open on November 4th.
Murphy, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2006’s Dreamgirls but lost, is said to worship the Oscars.
“Nobody knows movies better or is a bigger cinephile than Eddie. Not Brett. Not even Quentin Tarantino. Eddie can quote scenes from every single movie word for word,” an insider said.
“He can bring all that experience to hosting. Plus he has Saturday Night Live experience before a live crowd. And worldwide the biggest crossover comedians are Will Smith and Eddie Murphy.”
The Oscars find this important because a huge part of the Academy Awards telecast audience is global. And with a new movie opening before the Oscars, Murphy could benefit from the publicity. Besides, the Academy has been after more diversity, which is why this October it’s honoring James Earl Jones and Oprah Winfrey.
