80’s pop singer El DeBarge, who was once the singer and co-founder of the family group DeBarge, was arrested and charged with drug possession with the intent to sell in Encino, California, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said to CNN.
The singers real name is Eldra Patrick DeBarge, and he was apparently arrested during a drug deal as he was caught along with a man named Curtis Freeman, who was charged with attempted possession of narcotics. DeBarge’s bail was set at $30,000 while Freeman’s was set at $10,000.
Since the early 2000’s the 50-year-old DeBarge has had a string of drug-related legal issues, first being arrested in 2001 for cocaine possession for which he received probation. He also received probation for his next two drug arrests in 2006 and 2007.
However, he was arrested for a fourth time on drug charges in 2008 for possession of crack and drug paraphernalia. For violating his probation, he received a two-year prison sentence.
After serving his time in prison DeBarge revealed he had a drug addiction for 25 years that ruined his career during its peek in the mid 80’s. After his prison stay, he came out with his first solo album in 16 years called ‘Second Chances’ and claimed he was born again and had found sobriety. However, in 2011 he checked into rehab for a relapse of his addiction.
After having early success with his family members in the group ‘DeBarge,’ El, split from them in the mid 80’s and saw his most success with his first self titled solo album in 1986, which turned gold, since then he released 4 more solo albums without much success.
