Kellie Pickler feels that it is important to have a “cancer buddy” and explained that to Ellen Degeneres on her talk show, which is why she opted to shave her head.
The country music singer decided to shave her head along with her close childhood friend, Summer Miller, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Summer was told it is better to shave her head now, rather than to wake up with it falling out. So in a move of solidarity to her support her close friend, Pickler decided that she would shave her head along with Summer.
On Friday, Kellie chose to go on the Ellen DeGeneres show to discuss the decision in further detail.
“It’s just hair!” the 26-year-old said on an episode that is set to air on Monday. “I will be honest with you, I was a little nervous, and she was too. [We thought], ‘I hope we don’t have some crazy birthmark or wart or mole or something,’ but we had fun.”
Pickler also chose to shave her head in honor of her grandmother who passed away shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.
“A lot of people don’t know this but my grandmother passed away with cancer,” she told Ellen. “It was a different type of cancer, but she passed away the very next morning after being diagnosed.”
“I think it’s important to have a cancer buddy,” Pickler added. “Of course, it’s hard. It’s hard on your body; it’s hard on your mind. It’s not an easy thing to go through. But, she’s a strong woman, and she’s handled it with such grace.”
