Former ‘Harry Potter’ star Emma Watson is starting to branch out in other areas of acting and taking on a role completely opposite of her familiar heroin character Hermione Granger, as she has started filming “The Bling Ring.”
“The Bling Ring” is based on a group of real-life teenagers that went by the same name, who burglarized several celebrity homes in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Megan Fox to name a few.
Watson will be playing the lead role of Nicki, who is modeled after the real-life and well-off Rachel Lee, who was the alleged ringleader of the group. Lee would often organize the break-ins of certain celebrity homes that were considered fashion icons when she wanted to add to her wardrobe or more cash was desired. From about October 2008 through August 2009 the group had stolen a reported $3 million of property and cash, most of which was said to be from Hilton.
Lee was said to be a reality TV junky, which led to Watson having to watch hours of it to prepare herself for the role.
“I just watched a ton of reality TV,” she says. “I was doing an English course [at Brown University]. So I would go from reading Virginia Woolf to [watching] Kim Kardashian. I kind of loved it, this mix of super-high and super-low culture. I think it was a nice balance.”
Watson also recently revealed details about her character via Twitter, including her penchant for “lip gloss, purses, yoga, pole dancing, Uggs, Louboutins, juice cleanses, iced coffee and tattoos.”
Filming started in March of this year and has a 2013 release date. The film is being directed by Sofia Coppola, and also stars Taissa Farmiga and Leslie Mann, as well as newcomers Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Julien and Georgia Rock.
