Singing contestant Erika Van Pelt was kicked off American Idol Thursday night and as it was the season’s first surprise elimination.
On an elimination night where they celebrated judge Steven Tyler’s birthday, Erika found herself in the bottom three with, Deandre Brackensick and Heejun Han. Some believe out of the three Pelt was the best performer and actually thought that two other contestant’s Hollie Cavanagh or Skylar Lane, not in the bottom three did not have performances better than Van Pelt.
For Wednesday’s performances themed Billy Joel night, Van Pelt performed “New York State of Mind,” revealing a new look from her dirty blonde long hair to a dark black colored short cut.
Though the jazzy type singer, Van Pelt, received mostly positive feedback from the judges and had been their wild card pick to make the top 12 a top 13, they did not use their one time ‘judges save’ to keep Van Pelt on the show for at least one more week.
Pelt is the fourth contestant to be eliminated since the shows finals have started and’ Idol’ is now down to nine contestants. Though she was ultimately eliminated because of a lack of fan support and votes, she took to Twitter to thank the fans she did have.
“Thank you all for the love. The journey is just beginning. I’m heartbroken but happy for the others. See you all on tour this summer! #idol” She tweeted.
