Gina Tognoni will join the Young and the Restless as Michelle Stafford’s successor in the role of Phyllis Summers Newman. The show’s producers thought Tognoni was a perfect match after viewing her auditions.

Word has it that the two-time Emmy winner impressed everyone on her take on the character, and it was reportedly “flawless” during the audition.

Stafford, who had made such an impact in the role, departed the series in 2013 and signed on to play Nina Clay on General Hospital where she will begin airing in all new episodes in June!

Tognoni won Miss Rhode Island Teen USA in 1991 and Miss Rhode Island Teen All-American in 1993. In 1995, she was cast as Kelly Cramer on ABC’s soap opera One Life to Live, a role she originated and portrayed to 2001. She returned to daytime television as Dinah Marler on CBS’s Guiding Light in July 2004 and won her first Daytime Emmy in 2006 for her work on the soap.

In 2007, she was nominated again in the same category but lost out to Genie Francis. She won her second Emmy in 2008, becoming only the second actress to become a repeat winner in the Supporting Actress category. On September 20, 2009, it was announced that Tognoni would be appearing in the webseries Venice: The Series, as Sami, along with former Guiding Light cast members Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia.

On September 23, 2009, it was announced that Tognoni would be reprising her role of Kelly Cramer on One Life to Live.

And now, CBS is added to her resume as she will take over the role of Phyllis on The Young and the Restless, which was originally portrayed by Stafford.
