John Carter – The John Carter Walt Disney trailer has arrived. (Video)
The first full trailer directed by Pixar’s Andrew Stanton, was released Thursday. It gives fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of books a closer look at how Disney will depict the sci-fi adventure story.
The trailer focuses on John Carter (Taylor Kitsch, of “Friday Night Lights”), a former military Civil War captain who is transported to the dangerous planet Mars.
In approximately two minutes, the trailer introduces the Tharks, green Martians, especially including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe). Also part of the trailer is the red Martians of Helium, notably Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”). We also get a glimpse of the white apes and Woola, the calot (guard beast), and a gladiatorial fight. Â
In the movie, he becomes involved in a conflict between the planet’s inhabitants, rediscovering his humanity as the battle for the survival of Barsoom comes to a head and its survival depends on his actions.
Essentially, it’s the moving picture version of some of movie stills already released, with the conflict suggested and his role explained.
While the trailer doesn’t give much away, as Stanton is adamantly against spoilers in trailers and other promotional materials, it offers a familiar blend of sci-fi and fantasy blend, with elements that remind audiences both “Gladiator” and “Avatar.”
Stanton’s movie adaptation is based on Burroughs’ 1917 “A Princess of Mars,” the first in the 11-volume Barsoom series.
The film is based on a script co-written by Stanton, who directed and co-wrote “Wall-E,” and Pulitzer Prize-winner author Michael Chabon.
The movie stars Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Thomas Haden Church, Samantha Morton, James Purefoy, Dominic West, Bryan Cranston and Mark Strong. Â
“John Carter” opens in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on March 9, 2012.
