John Denver Musical – John Denver’s songs are set to hit the Broadway stage as part of a new musical called “A Moment in Time.” Actor Drake Bell and Lindsay Pierce were part of an 11-strong cast read through last week. Insiders claim the project will feature reworked versions of Denver’s hits like Annie’s Song, Rocky Mountain High, and Take Me Home, Country Roads.
A Moment in Time follows the story of a mortally wounded marine in Afghanistan who recalls a happier time with his family in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The project was developed by five-time Tony Award winner Stewart F. Lane, who was recently honored with the 2011 John Denver Spirit Award.
Lane is a five-time Tony Award winning Broadway producer with two shows currently on Broadway: Priscilla Queen of the Desert and War Horse. He also has a DVD out now based on his critically acclaimed book, Let’s Put on a Show! and a new book called “Jews of Broadway.”
In addition to publishing two plays, he has directed across the country, working with Stephen Baldwin, Shannon Doherty, Chazz Palminteri, and more. He is co-owner of the Palace Theatre (Broadway) with the Nederlander Organization and a partner in the Tribeca Grill with Robert De Niro. Having been an actor, Mr. Lane has begun public speaking about his theatrical ventures.
After growing up in numerous locations with his military family, Denver began his music career in folk music groups in the late 1960s. His greatest commercial success was as a solo singer. Denver died in October, 1997, when the plane he was piloting crashed into Monterey Bay, California.
Throughout his life Denver recorded and released approximately 300 songs, about 200 of which he composed. He performed primarily with an acoustic guitar and sang about his joy in nature, his enthusiasm for music, and relationship trials. Denver’s music appeared on a variety of charts including country and western, the Billboard Hot 100, and adult contemporary, in all earning him 12 gold and 4 platinum albums with his signature songs “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, “Rocky Mountain High”, “Annie’s Song” and “Calypso”.
