Julia Roberts allegedly bullied her half sister, Nancy Motes, about her weight so much that she underwent gastric bypass surgery and now weighs 155 lbs. Roberts may be a pretty woman, but she has a bad side.
Speaking out for the first time, Motes says her star actress sibling has teased her for years about her weight problems.
“When I was in high school and she was an adult, she would just let me know that I was definitely overweight,” Motes, 37, said. “She would make it quite clear to me and in a not-so-nice a manner.”
“It just makes me feel incredibly hurt and very sad,” added Motes, who once weighed nearly 300 pounds.
The years of criticism pushed Motes, who is the daughter of Roberts’ mother Betty Lou and stepfather Michael Motes, to undergo gastric bypass surgery.
She had the procedure done in June 2010 and now weighs 155 pounds.
Motes is hoping her new look helps her repair the broken relationship with Roberts, 45.
“I think we’re both trying to change our opinions of each other,” Motes said. “It’s a work in progress. It’s not going to be fixed overnight, nor do I think it’s going to be fixed at this point by me just getting skinny.”
The family grew up in Smyrna, Ga., just outside of Atlanta.
Motes described Roberts as a “good big sister who played with me a lot.”
She was still an “awkward” eighth-grader when Roberts landed her break-out role as Vivian Ward in “Pretty Woman.”
Motes said her fellow students bullied her over her famous sibling’s role as a prostitute.
And her feelings of inadequacy were compounded by the fact that her two other siblings — Eric Roberts and Lisa Roberts Gillan — were also stars.
After graduating high school, Motes headed to Los Angeles in January 1995 to pursue an acting career of her own. But when she told Roberts of her ambition, the A-list actress was not at all supportive. “Julia did not want to see me go down that path,” Motes said.
Their relationship grew even more testy in April 2010 when, Motes said, Roberts made a snide comment about her weight.
Still, Roberts helped Motes get a job as a production assistant on the hit TV show, “Glee.”
But after she moved to Los Angeles, she fell into a deep depression and her weight ballooned to 289 pounds.
The bypass procedure has made her feel like a new person and she now lives in a Malibu apartment with her fiance John Dilbeck, a film and TV locations manager.
The couple is planning to wed in May 2014, and Motes denied reports that Roberts isn’t coming because she doesn’t approve of the relationship.
