Marisa Tomei and Hugh Grant star in the new Lionsgate film “The Rewrite,” which will open in theaters on Oct. 8.

According to The Spreadit, in the romantic comedy, Grant plays a screenwriter named Keith Michaels who has not had any success since 1998. Keith Michaels, who won an Oscar for his work in 98, has encountered failure after failure. Keith Michaels is now desperate and broke enough to take a teaching job at a small college.

Tomei costars as Holly Carpenter, a middle-aged woman completing her college education. J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney appear in supporting roles. The film is written and directed by Marc Lawrence, who previously directed Hugh Grant in “Music and Lyrics,” “Two Weeks Notice” and “Did You Hear About the Morgans?”

Marc Lawrence, a 1981 alumnus of Binghamton University, says the setting for this new Marisa Tomei and Hugh Grant movie was intentional. He told BU student newspaper Pipe Dream:

“The movie’s very much a love letter to Binghamton. I have nothing but affection and wonderful memories and I wanted to give some of that experience … There’s spiedies in it, and… the miserable weather and there’s the long wait for the one nice day that suddenly appears at the end of the year that seems to make the miserable weather worth it.”

The Marisa Tomei and Hugh Grant film says:

“The pair find themselves connected by their mutual need for a second chance.”

Though Keith Michaels intends to use his fame and new position to impress college girls, he instead finds romance with Marisa Tomei, a single mother who has returned to school.

The movie marks the fourth time Marisa Tomei and Hugh Grant will have teamed with Marc Lawrence in different film projects.

Here’s the official synopsis of the new film starring Marisa Tomei and Hugh Grant:

“Once upon a time, screenwriter Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) was on top of the world — a Golden Globe Award and a hit movie to his name, a beautiful wife and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of wit and charm. But that was fifteen years ago: now, he’s divorced, broke, approaching fifty and hasn’t written a hit film in years. Luckily, his agent has a job for him — a university in the quiet town of Binghamton is looking for someone to teach a course in screenwriting, and with an empty wallet as his motivation, Keith Michaels can’t say no. Hoping to give minimal attention to his duties and focus on writing a new script, his attitude slowly begins to turn when he meets Holly (Marisa Tomei). A single mum working two jobs to earn her degree, the pair find themselves connected by their mutual need for a second chance.”

There’s been a lot of talk about this Marisa Tomei and Hugh Grant film. When it was first announced in 2012, that the two will pair up for this romantic comedy, fans got excited. Now, the wait is almost over.
