In a “Cloud Atlas” movie promo last week, which stars Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, Matrix Director Larry Wachowski announced that he’s now a she, going from man to a woman after a sex-change procedure.
“Hi, I’m Lana,” the 47-year-old movie director said, while wearing a gray dress and fuchsia dreadlocks, and speaking in Wachowski’s strong German accent.
It’s unclear if the director’s sex change is complete, but Wachowski says she has been “transitioning” from male to female for years.
She embraced her new identity in a trailer for the film and is credited under the name Lana Wachowski.
The movie, based on a sci-fi novel by British author David Mitchell, is about two people who swap names and genders in the production.
Rumors about Wachowski’s sex life have circulated since 2002, when the director filed for divorce after being photographed in a notorious LA S&M club, The Dungeon.
The onetime carpenter then bought a $2.7 million mansion in San Francisco under the name Laurencia Wachowski.
Wachowski’s new film is one of the most hotly anticipated of the year. It is based on British author David Mitchell’s hit book, which features six interlocking stories beginning in the 1800s and progressing to the future. The cast includes Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon and Jim Broadbent.
