American Idol host Ryan Seacrest appeared on the TODAY show Wednesday morning to make a big announcement about the NBC coverage of the Summer Olympics, but he also took the time to try to clear the tension between him and current host Matt Lauer.
First, Seacrest announced that he had signed a new deal with NBC Universal, which will include him hosting NBC’s coverage of the London Olympic games.
The prior conversations with NBCUniversal were also rumored to be about a deal to take over Lauer’s job as host of the TODAY show after his contract expires at the end of the year.
Lauer cut right to the chase and asked Seacrest, “What kind of conversations have you had with NBC about joining the Today Show?”
Ryan jokingly replied, “Oh, they didn’t tell you?”
Lauer then said, “You didn’t answer the question, and I want names and dates.”
Seacrest tried to ease the tension though by saying, “I see you doing this for as long as you want to, so how long will you be on the “Today” show? Because fans, and myself included, think you should be doing this for a long time,’ Seacrest replied.
Lauer has yet to let his intentions be known after his contract did not answer that question by Seacrest. He did state that both him, and Ryan are actually very friendly, after telling him he thought he would be great at the job and that after rumors broke that Seacrest was after his job they had dinner together to joke about it. They also both stated that there was no tension there.
