Debra Messing is opening up about her divorce of her 10-year marriage to writer Daniel Zelman and the guilt that followed in the June issue of More magazine.
“We both wanted it to last forever, and it’s a sad thing that it wasn’t able to go the course,” the Smash actress said. “Part of me will always contend with guilt that I wasn’t able to give my son the fantasy that my parents were able to give me.”
After working on opposite coasts for three years, Messing, 44, says she and Zelman tried to make it work to no avail — but are now content on focusing on their 9-year-old son, Roman.
“We really tried,” she says. “We made sacrifices and compromises, and in the end we both realized that we like the day-to-day domestic life.”
She adds, “Now we are co-parenting beautifully … We had Thanksgiving together. In my mind, we will be a nuclear family forever.
The couple filed for divorce in June 2012.
In early 2011, it was announced that Messing would star in a new NBC musical pilot called Smash for the 2011–2012 primetime season. In May 2011, it was reported that NBC picked up the show as a series for the 2011-2012 season. The show premiered on February 6, 2012.
The show was later renewed for a second season.
In 2011, the actress was ranked No. 22 on the TV Guide Network special, Funniest Women on TV.
Messing is currently dating her Smash costar Will Chase.
