Miss Venezuela Eva Ekvall – Miss Venezuela 2000 Eva Ekvall passed away on December 17th from complications with breast cancer at just the age of 28 in Houston Texas.
The pageant winner went on to become the third runner-up in the 2001 competition which was followed by a modeling career.
She was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2010 just 7 months after giving birth to her daughter. She underwent eight months of treatment that included chemotherapy, radiation and a mastectomy. She chronicled this experience in a book of photographs, Fuera de Foco (Out of Focus), released in 2011.
On the cover was a portrait in which she appeared with her head shaved and makeup. The book was a stunning revelation of what she was going through and it included images of her chemotherapy sessions.
“I hate to see photos in which I come out ugly,” Ekvall told El Nacional. “But you know what? Nobody ever said cancer is pretty or that I should look like Miss Venezuela when I have cancer.”
Eva Ekvall was cremated in Houston and the ashes will be taken to Venezuela for a formal ceremony on December 19th.
