Morgan Freeman was left having to clear up a hoax about some comments he made on the Connecticut shooting on the Internet this weekend following Friday’s incident at Sandy Hook elementary.

It is now believed over the weekend, a Reddit user known only as “Mark” made the comments that somehow were attributed to Freeman coldly blaming media for the school shooting, and they would incite more of the same, which ended up going viral.

The comments alleged to be Freeman’s read, “It’s because of the way the media reports it, Turn on the news and see how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single ‘victim’ of Columbine?”

The comments continued, “Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basement see the news and want to top it by doing something worse and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he’ll be remembered as a horrible monster instead of a sad nobody.”

The fake Freeman comments concluded, “So congratulations, sensationalist media. You’ve just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day-care center or maternity ward next.”

Freeman’s publicist told TheWrap on Sunday the actor never made the comments, and they were looking to find out where the hoax originated from. Other Reddit users started commenting that the comments attributed to Freeman looked similar to the ones made by the user “Mark,” on the social site. Later, the “Mark” user posted that, “If I know the Internet, someone will attribute the quote to Morgan Freeman or Betty White, and it’ll go viral.”
