Q In James Bond Movie Is Due To Change

Q James Bond Movie – Even if you can’t remember who James Bond’s adversary was in a given movie or what Agent 007 was supposed to be saving the world from, you can probably recall the nifty, surreptitious and often lethal gadgets provided to him by Q, the pseudonymous tech wizard of Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

The character’s Q division was named in Ian Fleming’s novels, and a forerunner of the character, called Major Boothroyd, appears in the inaugural Bond film, “Dr. No.” But the avuncular Q is most closely associated with Desmond Llewelyn, the actor who played the role in 17 Bond movies beginning with “From Russia With Love” (in 1963) and ending with “The World Is Not Enough.” John Cleese took over the character briefly, and Q has so far made no appearances at all in the rebooted Bond films starring Daniel Craig. But all of that — cue that jazzy theme music — is about to change.

Ben Whishaw, a star of the television miniseries “The Hour” and Julie Taymor’s film adaptation of “The Tempest,” will play Q in the coming 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise, BBC News reported.

Whishaw, who is also slated to play Richard II for the BBC, is a mere 31 years old to Craig’s 43, marking the first time in the film series that Q will be younger than Bond.

None of Q’s new gadgets were immediately announced — a murderous iPhone, perhaps? — though producers have said that the new Bond movie will be called “Skyfall,” a decision whose implications this blog has previously addressed.
