R Kelly Back Taxes – Singer R. Kelly, often referred to as the King of R&B, has decided not to pay the IRS since 2005 and is now in hot water after it has been determined he owes $4.8 million in back taxes.
TMZ is reporting that R. Kelly had accumulated the massive tax bill between 2005 and 2010, and that for 2005 alone he owes $1,472,366.77.
Without giving a reason for why he stopped paying his taxes, a rep for Kelly told TMZ, “R. Kelly is in the process of working everything out with the government and is confident that all his obligations will be satisfied.”
Kelly is recognized as one of the most successful R&B artists of all-time, but has also had his fair share of legal issues over the years aside from the current tax debt.
After a July 1996 brawl at a Lafayette, Louisiana health club involving bodyguard William Robert Savy, Kelly was placed on a year’s unsupervised probation starting August 13, 1997. One of the victims, Christopher Mahoney, needed 110 facial stitches.
Kelly was arrested on April 8, 1998 on three misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, including one charge on violating noise ordinance for playing loud music from his car.
On February 3, 2002, a video showing Kelly engaging in sex with, and urinating on, an allegedly underage woman surfaced. The woman defended R. Kelly, later saying that she consented. In June 2002, Kelly was indicted in Chicago on 21 counts of having sex with a minor, which were later reduced to soliciting a minor for child pornography, seven counts of videotaping the acts, and seven counts of producing child pornography.
Kelly divorced his wife of 12 years in January of 2009.
