Actress Reese Witherspoon will star in the West Memphis 3 true story “Devil’s Knot” with Atom Egoyan. The film is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book “Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three.”
Witherspoon will play Pam Hobbs, the mother of three 8-year-old boys who were brutally murdered in West Memphis, Ark., in May 1993. Hobbs originally believed the defendants Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., were the killers, but as the case dragged on and more details became available, she came to believe that the trio did not commit the heinous crime.
“Did I really believe it, no, not 100 percent that they did it,” she told Jonesboro, Ark.-based KAIT-TV. “I didn’t believe they were capable enough or smart enough to have committed the crime, cleaned the scene up and be guilty for it.”
The book which chronicled the prolonged murder trial and the three men who served 18 years in prison before being released as part of a plea deal.
Over the years, Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and other prominent musicians had raised money in support of the West Memphis Three, who had maintained their innocence all along.
Reese Witherspoon, who was last seen in “Water For Elephants,” next stars alongside Chris Pine and Tom Hardy in McG’s “This Means War.”
