Ricky Gervais Golden Globes, Oscar has Billy Crystal and now the Golden Globes have Ricky Gervais. The actor will host the 2012 Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association confirmed Wednesday. The HFPA tweeted about the assignment, which is a return gig for the caustic comic who in 2010 roasted the organization and many Hollywood heavyweights during the event.
“Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at the Oscars. He agreed (true),” Gervais wrote on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
Crystal, of course, was recently named host of the Academy Awards. He replaced Eddie Murphy, who bailed out after producer and pal Brett Ratner exited the show. Ratner said goodbye after causing an uproar by using a gay slur during a talk about his film “Tower Heist.”
In 2010, Gervais raised eyebows when he went after NBC, Mel Gibson and the HFPA during his opening monologue.
“One thing that can’t be bought is a Golden Globe,” he said, noting he might be going too far. “I’m not going to do this again, anyway.”
Though there was a bit of consternation afterward, he was invited back the following year to host, too, where he slammed Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr.
NBC will air the Globes, considered one of Hollywood’s most festive awards, on Jan. 15.
