Sarah Hyland, known as Haley Dunphy on the television program “Modern Family,” has been struggling most of her life with kidney disease. She was first diagnosed when she was only 9-years-old.
Hyland, 21, remembers that day clearly, “I would be in a lot of pain a lot of the time. If I didn’t get, like, 12 hours of sleep, It felt, like — It felt, like, none at all,” Sarah revealed.
Many of her fans don’t know it, but she often has to sit down between scenes in order to make it through her workday.
“You know, if you’re sick, you still go to work. And in between takes, you sit down, or you lay your head down or something,” she said.
The actress and her family decided to search for a compatible organ donor after her pains began to get worse and in order to evade having to be put on dialysis.
They did not have to look very far, as her perfect match was her father, actor Edward Hyland.
In April, Hyland and her father went through with the successful transplant.
Now the young actress is taking a break from work in order to recuperate.
She’s doing great and her story reveals the importance of organ donation.
