Shakira Attacked by Sea Lion in South Africa (PHOTOS)

Shakira reported on her Facebook page on Sunday that she was rescued by her brother from a sea lion attack.

While on a nature tour, Shakira was with her brother in Cape Town, South Africa where they came across some sea lions. The singer said she tried to move in closer to get a good photo of one of them. However, apparently she spooked the animal, and it turned on her.

“Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me,” she wrote. “I was paralyzed by fear and couldn’t move; I just kept eye contact with it while my brother ‘Super Tony’ jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast.”

She added, “I believe what happened is that it confused the shiny reflection of the BlackBerry, I was taking these pics with, with some sort of fish. It probably thought I was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it,” Shakira wrote.

Though sea lion attacks on humans are rare, they have occurred, in 2007 a sea lion leaped out of the water and mauled a 13-year-old Western Australian girl who was being pulled on skies behind a boat. It was getting ready for a second attack when the girl was pulled to safety. An expert at the time thinks that the sea lion may have thought the girl was a toy to play with being dragged through the water.

In San Francisco there have been reports of big male sea lions biting swimmers, the aggressive behavior is believed to be because of the large males trying to protect its territory.
