Oprah Winfrey traveled to an Orangeburg, South Carolina jail, last week to interview Shaquan Duley, who is charged with killing her two young sons by driving her car into the Edisto River and letting them drown.
In August of 2010 Shaquan Duley claimed that while driving with 2-year-old Devean and 18-month-old Ja’van, she lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into the water. However Sheriff Larry Williams said Duley made an error by making that statement when in the aftermath indications did not support that.
“For someone who’s just plunged into the Edisto River, and has two children, the clothing wasn’t damp as though she tried to retrieve the children from the river,” Williams said.
In the interview for Oprah’s Next Chapter to air on April 1st on the OWN network, Oprah asks Duley why she killed her sons. She also has a 7-year-old daughter who was not in the car.
Duley plead guilty on the two counts of murder after what she claimed was an accident and faces 30 years in prison at her sentencing hearing on March 30th. At her March 16th court date Duley said, “This is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through in my life, I’d like to ask forgiveness from my family. I’d also like to apologize to the community.”
