Malil, who appeared in the hit comedy movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” was in court for the opening of his trial in California. The actor faces attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Kendra Beebe, in the back yard of his home. The defendant claims he was fighting off a male intruder in a darkened room.

Trial proceedings got underway Wednesday. His ex-girlfriend was stabbed more than 20 times. Kendra Beebe suffered a punctured lung and other wounds.

Shelley Malil, 45, has pleaded not guilty. The charges include premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and residential burglary. He faces life in prison if found guilty.
