Spice Girls musical in the works including theater performance. The Spice Girls are working on a new musical called Viva Forever. The musical will feature the original members of the group.
Their music is still delivering messages about the strength of women and the importance of friendship. The British pop girl group formed in 1994. The members consist of Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell.
Their first debut single, “Wannabe”, hit number-one in 31 countries in 1996 and helped establish the group as a “global phenomenon”. They have been credited for being the pioneers who paved the way for the commercial breakthrough of teen pop in the 1990s. Spice, their first album, sold more than 23 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album by a female group in music history. They have sold over 75 million records worldwide with only four albums and twelve singles, making them the most successful British band since The Beatles and the best selling girl group of all time.
They reunited for a tour in 2007-2008 and their last record effort was released in 2000. However, their music is still popular, and back in January plans were announced to bring their music to a theater stage in the form of a musical. These plans are moving forward.
“Viva Forever” will not be a tribute show or a show telling the story of the lives of the Spice Girls. However, their music will be used for inspiration for the project. It will be produced by Judy Craymer and Simon Fuller. The two are credited with bringing “Mamma Mia!” to Broadway in 2001.
“We live in a world dominated by people wanting to be famous. What the Spice Girls did was before those shows became really what they are, and before the world became slightly obsessed by such shows,” stated Craymer.
