The Black Keys Lonely Boy Arrives

It’s been a long time coming, but The Black Keys have released their new “Lonely Boy” single on the Apple iTunes Store. The band is working on their latest Danger Mouse-produced album, which features the Lonely Boy song, entitled “The Black Keys El Camino.” The release date is set for December 6.

On July 14, 2011, the group revealed in an interview with Spin magazine that they had finished work on the album, comparing the sound to influences such as the Clash and the Cramps. The next single to be released is called “Little Black Submarine.” The album’s title was later revealed to be “El Camino” on October 9.

The track is already available on the Apple iTunes Store for purchase. The song demonstrates how the band continues to seek out the middle ground between snarling blues rock and super-catchy melodic guitar rock. It’s something they have nearly perfected over the years.

The artists on the track are Dan Auerbach (guitar and lead vocals) and Patrick Carney (drummer). According to an interview on NPR’s Fresh Air, the band’s name came from a schizophrenic artist named Alfred McMoore that the pair knew; he would leave incoherent messages on their answering machines referring to their fathers as ‘black keys’ such as “D flat” when he was upset with them.

The band was formed in Akron, Ohio, and they released their debut album, “The Big Come Up,” in early 2002. The album was very successful for a new independent rock band. Along with their second album, it was recorded entirely in drummer Patrick Carney’s basement on an 8-track tape recorder from the early 1980s. The album spawned two singles released as an EP, “Leavin’ Trunk” and “She Said, She Said”.

This will be their 7th album to date. As of October 2010, they have sold over 1.7 million records.
