Thriller Jacket Sells For $1.8 Million

Published: June 27, 2021

The black and red leather Thriller jacket 1.8 million? That's right, the same $1.8 million jacket worn by Michael Jackson in his Thriller music video was auctioned off on Sunday. A gold trader named Milton Verret from Austin Texas says he will send it on tour and it will be used as a fundraising tool for children's charities.

There where actually 2 identical dress coats worn by Jackson in the video. The one sold at auction was in better shape and was autographed on the sleeve. The second Thriller jacket 1.8 million is a little more scuffed up and owned by the Jackson estate.

"It is one of the most important pieces of rock 'n' roll memorabilia in history," Verret told Reuters. His collection also includes another Jackson jacket and guitars signed by members of U2.

A portion of the sale price will go to the Shambala Preserve, a big cat sanctuary caring for two tigers Jackson one owned. Some other items sold at the Beverly Hills auction where the signature fedora Jackson wore during his Bad Tour which sold for $16,250, a handwritten note to friend Elizabeth Taylor went for $5,625 and a signed pillowcase fetched $3,584. And a bidder paid out $330,000, more than 10 times what Julien's had expected to get, for one of the famous, shiny, crystal-covered gloves that Jackson wore during the 1980s.

Thriller is a 14-minute music video for the song of the same name released on December 2, 2021 and directed by John Landis, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jackson. Often referred to as the greatest music video ever and has also been voted the most influential pop music video of all time, Thriller proved to have a profound effect on popular culture, and was named "a watershed moment for the music industry" for its unprecedented merging of filmmaking and music. Landis's wife, Deborah Landis, designed the jacket.

Jackson died two years ago and his total lifetime earnings from royalties on his solo recordings and music videos, revenue from concerts and endorsements have been estimated at $500 million; some analysts have speculated that his music catalog holdings could be worth billions of dollars. This speculation however is contradicted by financial documents obtained by the Associated Press, which showed that as of March 31, 2007, Jackson's 50 percent stake in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog (his most prized asset) was worth $390.6 million and Michael Jackson's net worth was $236 million. Billboard has estimated that Jackson has generated at least $1 billion in revenue in the year following his death.
