Vanessa Williams opens up about molestation and abortion in new book – The Desperate Housewives actresshas decided to reveal some secrets in her memoirs, including an abortion when Williams was only 18. The book about is titled “You Have No Idea,” and Vanessa recalls how rough it was to make a serious decision just two years before winning the Miss America crown.
“Being pregnant is the most frightening thing that happens in your life,” Williams explained. “I knew in high school that’s something that I was not prepared to do or fight or struggle with.”
She told ‘Nightline’ that she didn’t realize that the sexual molestation she suffered as a fifth grader was wrong until she was in college and was probably to blame for being sexually active leading to her pregnancy. “I think I was highly sexualized because I was in fifth grade and I had this experience,” Williams said. “Because it feels good, you’re like, OK, well this is supposed to be normal. That’s not normal for a 10-year-old to be seduced.”
Vanessa co-wrote the book with her mother Helen Williams. Helen was unaware about some of the things such as the abortion and sexual abuse her daughter suffered from, at the hands of a female friend of the families when she was a child, until they worked on the book together.
Helen said in the ‘Nightline’ interview, “[I] had no idea that, that had happened, but in retrospect, it kind of put into place some of her reactions during her pre-teen years.”
Shortly after winning the Miss America pageant in 1983, a controversy arrived after Penthouse magazine published nude photos of Williams. Because of the controversy, she relinquished her crown to the first runner-up, Suzette Charles.
