The weekend soared at the box office as “Identity Thief” tops the gross earnings with $14 million.
According to Sunday’s studio estimates the crime comedy film brought in $14.1 million over the weekend which was enough to take back their number-one spot from “A Good Day to Die Hard.” The Bruce Willis sequel action film fell short in the U.S.; however, it brought in $35.7 million overseas.
Melissa McCarthy’s and Jason Bateman’s buddy comedy/road film has been the biggest hit of 2013. It has brought in a cumulative total of $93.7 million, even though it received bad reviews from critics.
“The holding power of a film always gives you an idea of the strength of its concept or its star,” said Nikki Rocco, Universal head of distribution. “In this case, it’s both.”
Just as many industry experts predicted, even the muscle of The Rock couldn’t take down McCarthy. Dwayne Johnson’s action drama “Snitch” had to settle for #2 with $13 million. While the movie’s debut was soft, Johnson should take some comfort in the fact that it fared better than 2013 action flops from Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham.
