X Factor has been a bag of surprises during its 2012 season and last night was no exception when Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato argued over who would have the deciding vote and kick one act off the show.
Paige Thomas and Jennel Garcia were kept waiting to hear which of them would survive as the two judges rowed live on air about who would cast their vote first. With L.A. Reid and Britney Spears both choosing to send 18-year-old Jennel home, hosts Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian asked Simon to give them his decision.
But the 53-year-old music mogul refused to vote and told the exasperated presenters he wanted to hear who Demi — the mentor for both contestants — would save.In a seemingly tactical move, 20-year-old Demi said she was sending Paige home, leaving the deciding vote to Simon.
The British TV star, whose group Lyric145 were the first act voted off earlier in the show, took only a short time to reveal his decision.
“For me it’s a relatively easy decision. The act I’m going to send home is Jennel,” he said.
Jennel, from Rochester, Massachusetts, and Paige, from Phoenix, Arizona, were forced to compete against one another in the X Factor sing-off despite getting positive comments from the judges on Wednesday night’s divas-themed show.
While Jennel had impressed with a rocking version of Proud Mary, 22-year-old Paige was complimented on her rendition of Donna Summer disco classic Last Dance. But the two girls, who are both in Demi’s ‘young adults’ category’ found themselves in the bottom three and battled it out for a place in next week’s live show.
Wearing leather trousers and a chiffon shirt, Jennel looked shaken after performing The Reason by American rock band Hoobastank for her save-me song.
