Zachery Quinto has reported that he is gay. Quinto has confessed that he is gay by opening up about his sexual orientation for the first time in a new interview with New York Magazine. He also discussed his role in the off-Broadway production of “Angels in America.”
Calling the play a “challenging” and “rewarding” experience, Zachary Quinto also spoke openly about his own life and how the issues in the play affected him personally.
“As a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed,” he said.
Writing on his blog, he confirmed he felt he needed to come out to help contribute to complete equality following the suicide of gay teen Jamey Rodemeyer in September. “In light of Jamey”s death, it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it, is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality,” he wrote.
“When I found out that Jamey Rodemeyer killed himself,” the actor posted, “I felt deeply troubled. However, when I found out that Jamey Rodemyer made an ‘It Gets Better’ video only months before taking his own life, I felt indescribable despair.” he added.
Though Quinto has been mum about himself for years, as recently as last year he refused to confirm rampant fan speculation in an interview when asked if he was gay, he has spoken out against bullying, even making a video for the “It Gets Better” campaign.
Quinto expressed regret at not having come out sooner. Still, he feels that both Rodemeyer and “Angels in America” were catalysts for him, giving him the chance to pay that hope forward to someone else. “Now I can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one person in this world,” Quinto wrote.
