Zoraida Sambolin says she has breast cancer and is getting a double mastectomy. The CNN “Early Start” morning show anchor talked about her condition on the show Tuesday.
The subject was brought up while she was discussing the recent double mastectomy of actress Angelina Jolie.
Sambolin said wanting to be there for her children helped her make the decision.
“[Jolie] said I feel empowered, that I’m in a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity,” Sambolin said. “You know, it’s nice to hear somebody else talk about it and have that support of a lot of women around you.”
In a New York Times op-ed, Jolie announced she has had a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carried a gene that made it extremely likely she would get breast cancer. Jolie writes that she made the choice with thoughts of her six children after watching her own mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, die too young from cancer.
Mastectomy might sound like the last thing they’d want, but they should know that reconstructive surgery is paid for by many insurance companies.
Sambolin also talks about how she broke the news to her kids and how she spent days agonizing thinking of ways to do it.
Today, she is more optimistic than ever because she’s done her research and knows that this is one fight that she can — and will — win.
