American Idol Michael Johns was placed in the bottom three for the first time.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't surprised," Johns told reporters Friday. "I'd never been in the bottom three. I thought my strongest performances were the last two weeks. "Nothing has sunk in yet."

The American Idol finalist placed in the bottom three for the first time on Thursday, then in a shocking conclusion ended up being eliminated when the fans called in with their votes for his rendition of Aerosmith's "Dream On."

"I'm definitely surprised," said Johns, 29, this season's oldest finalist, adding that despite some of the judges' comments that his choice of songs for the inspirational-themed show was not the best, he stood by his choice, and it was not a bad song to go out on.

Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson were the other two bottom finalist where both have risked elimination in recent weeks.

Johns, 29, is a native of Perth, Australia and now lives in Los Angeles. Johns was not the only one in shock over the elimination result, there were boos from the audience during the live telecast.

"There are a lot of surprised fans here and watching right now," Seacrest noted.

Simon says he’s going to miss Michael Johns. Randy and Paula are seen hugging Michael as the show closes.

The past winners from "American Idol" include Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Taylor Hicks, Fantasia Barrino, and Ruben Studdard.
