General Motors has released details of a new electric car. The new all-electric Chevrolet Volt will be available in 2010.

General Motors Corp announced plans on Tuesday to release a new all-electric Chevrolet Volt by the year 2010.

The list of potential buyers, of more than 33,000, was compiled on a Web site. Lyle Dennis, a New York neurologist, led the battery-powered campaign on GM-Volt.com which has been compiling a list of prospective Volt buyers for over a year.

The GM Volt list shows an immediate demand for new electric cars. The Chevy Volt is a rechargeable, battery-operated vehicle equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack.

The list shows potential buyers from 46 different countries outside the United States. The highest number of Volt buyers are in California, Texas, Florida and Michigan.

The list also unveiled details that buyers are willing to pay an average price of 31,261 for the new car. General Motors said the vehicle will cost 40,000 to build.

The latest news from GM comes as the nation is paying higher gas prices in a slowing economy. Car makers are racing to development energy alternatives to the high cost of fuel.

Up to the present moment, details of the new 2010 Chevrolet Volt were under tight wraps.
