Doctor says sugar is toxic and should have warning label.
One pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, Dr. Robert Lustig, who has published over 75 articles on sugar, believes it is toxic and should carry warning labels.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta reported on Sunday night’s edition of ’60 Minutes’ on the effects of sugar and Dr. Lustig’s beliefs that it toxic and “killing us.”
Research shows that, mostly due to processed foods, each one of us is consuming an added 130 pounds of sugar a year. Dr. Lustig also says that sugar is no better than high fructose corn syrup when it comes to our health.
“They are basically equivalent. The problem is they’re both bad. They’re both equally toxic,” he says.
Dr. Lustig says that obesity, especially in children, is not the only harmful effect of ingesting the amounts of sugar that most of us don’t even realize we are. He tells Dr. Gupta ingesting great amounts of sugar also leads to, “Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease itself. Ultimately, this is a public health crisis…you have to do big things and you have to do them across the board.” .
“Tobacco and alcohol are perfect examples,” he says, referring to the regulations imposed on their consumption and the warnings on their labels. “I think sugar belongs in this exact same wastebasket,” Dr. Lustig says.
