Women Healthiest Citiess – In a new ranking of healthy cities for women published by Self magazine, Memphis came in dead last.

Memphis won the title of “worst,” at no. 100, in the 11th annual list of best cities for women, which appears in the December issue of Self, on newsstands now.

The magazine previews its findings online with a brief paragraph that says 7,000 pieces of data were considered, including rates of heart disease, cancer and sexually transmitted infections, air and water quality, exercise, safety and the number of farmers markets in the metro areas compared.

Memphis seemingly failed according to these guidelines but did, however, get a (+) for a “low drinking rate.”

Jackson, Miss., was 98 and Tulsa, Okla., was 99. Of the top 25 healthy cities highlighted on the website’s interactive map, none are in the south.

Cambridge, Mass., was named the healthiest city overall, followed by Bethesda, Md.; San Francisco; Minneapolis-St. Paul; and Boston.

This time last year, Memphis was cited for having dumb and unattractive residents compared to the other cities considered in a survey by Travel + Leisure magazine, but tops in barbecue. And in the last couple of years, Memphis has graced Forbes’ lists of “miserable” and “dangerous” cities.

In August, Bloomberg Business Week placed Memphis high on a list of “affordable fun.”
