Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc is waiting to decide when to introduce a new hybrid minivan to the United States. The Toyota Sienna, also known as the Estima, went on sale in Japan in 2001 and was going a product to sell to American families. The automaker then decided against the plan but worked on a new Sienna minivan design.
However, that plan was scratched because of the current economic recession. The plan was to introduce the Sienna Hybrid Minivan sometime after 2010. According to some reports, Toyota will soon announce a decision to either terminate the plan or to schedule a new release date.
Minivans are on high demand, and while drivers look for alternative fuel automobiles, the demands for cars with new hybrid technologies are growing faster. However, Toyota knows this, and most dealerships in the United States say that a plan to move the project forward may already be in place.
There are numerous signs that the economic recession might be on its way to recovery. The auto industry has been hit the hardest during the past year, taking several losses, and a long road ahead for recovery. It's not only Toyota which made this decision as other automobile manufacturers had to take a step backwards and drop new ideas on future planning.
While there are SUVs and mid-size hybrids coming to market already, it wouldn't take much for Toyota to bring forth a new minivan. For example, the Sienna shares the same engine as the Toyota Highlander which could be used if engineers develop a new drivetrain. While this sounds simple enough, there might be other reasons why the car maker waited.
There is also a lot of secrecy going on in the auto industry. While the car manufacturers develop new hybrid technologies, they don't exactly share everything they're doing. With that being said, Toyota might already have a new direction on how to tackle the minivan market.
