IBM stands for International Business Machines Corporation. The company helped pioneer the first information technology industry in the world. It provided a path that revolutioned the way companies and people share information. It was one of the first computer hardware companies in the world that delivered server solutions to enterprises. The company is the world's largest computer company. It has nearly 400,000 employees worldwide.

The business technology company has been successful for several decades. Its products were designed and developed to record, process, communicate, store and retrieve information.

The company was founded in 1896 as the Tabulating Machine Company. IBM adopted its current name in 1924, when it became an international manufacturing company. In 1981 the company introduced the IBM Personal Computer. It was the first PC compatible hardware platform. Descendants of the IBM PC compatibles make up the majority of microcomputers on the market today. The company eventually sold its PC division to the Chinese company Lenovo in 2005 for $655 million in cash and $600 million in Lenovo stock.

In 2007, the company's Printing Systems Division sold to Ricoh for $725 million. The two companies formed a new joint venture and formed InfoPrint Solutions Company.
